LiDAR is a remote sensing technology which uses laser pulses for the scanning and measure 3D dimension of an object with a 3D Data Capture. It performs point cloud scanning by bombarding millions of laser points and measures the reflected scan. LiDAR can be mounted on various platforms like terrestrial, mobile and airborne, depending upon the object to be scanned. The data accuracy of the LiDAR scanner varies from cm to mm. This accuracy can be obtained as per the requirement of application. The application of LiDAR has a variety of role in roads & highways. The data can be used for various calculation and analysis for the roads & highways like pavement analysis, road asset management, road damage assessment, as-built documentation etc.
Pavement profiling and designing is one of the major challenges faced by the road authority. Continuous movement of heavy vehicles, rains and other factors, damages the road pavement which accounts for several road accidents. To avoid these damages, continuous monitoring & maintenance of the road pavement is necessary. LiDAR has significant role in it due to high accuracy and density. It can scan more than 80 kms of the roadin a single day and the data is captured with high accuracy. These scanned data are further analysed to generate the road pavement profile along with crack patterns and road markings. This complete process takes 3 to 4 days and decision makers can take decision on basis of these pavement profile data. Using LIDAR technology the authorities can save more time and cost incurred in this process otherwise
Road Asset Management and as-built documentation are other activities which government has initiated countrywide. Both the activities require high precision and accuracy under DPR or feasibility report for road expansion or new road development. LiDAR here also plays an important role along with the 360 degree view panoramic camera. LiDAR captures all road assets like sign boards, signals, tolls plaza, buildings, Utility poles & Cables, divider, etc. with its geo-referenced 3D dimensions along with true pictures. The entire 3D model is developed on the basis of these inputs with high accuracy and further helps decision makers to take effective and robust decision.
LiDAR overcomes the traditional survey because of its accuracy and speed. Thus this technology helps in complete life cycle of roads and highways management from DPR or feasibility report to operations and maintenance.
